My friends in Louisiana are keeping a very close eye on Hurricane Gustav. The LA-SPCA is still planning to have their Thursday evening event (and I will attend), but is beginning to evacuate animals tomorrow. Their brand new shelter, located south of New Orleans on the west bank of the river, just opened recently. Their former shelter was destroyed by Katrina.<\/p>\n

So far, Humane-LA and ARNO are planning to hold their fundraising\/ book signing events as scheduled. I hope Wendy Diamond still comes. Amanda and Martin St. John of Muttshack will probably be there one way or another–either receiving an award for their post-Katrina efforts or evacuating animals in advance of Gustav. I still plan to go. My flight back to Minnesota is scheduled for Sunday, and should leave before Gustav arrives, if it does. I’m just trying to figure out what to cram into my one “free” suitcase allowed by Northwest Airlines. I had planned clothes for attending a memorial service at City Hall, some less formal book signings, and a cocktail party. Now I think I’ll somehow try to fit in more clothes for taking care of animals (I have plenty of those!). Will keep you posted… here is the schedule so far:<\/p>\n
