The Boy and the Cat

This morning as I was driving to work I saw a group of four boys standing at the curb waiting for the school bus. They were probably junior high age. Three of the boys were facing the street, and the other boy was facing the other way. A cat approached the group from the direction the one boy was facing. She was arching her back, apparently seeking attention. I continued to watch and hoped that the cat would be ok, wondering what the boy would do. I guess I’ve seen too many boys show cruelty to cats, especially when they’re among a group of other boys. I was delighted when the boy bent over and gently scratched the cat on top of the head, then under the chin. The cat was delighted too!

I had been listening to Wayne Dyer speak about seeing in the world what you expect from it. I thought that, in the future, it would be nice to expect that a boy would be kind to a cat.
