PIRATE

PIRATE
(ACD, Louisiana) rehomed in Minnesota (November 2006)

Pirate, a very sweet blue female ACD was on death row at Roicy Duhon Animal Control in Lafayette, Louisiana (a kill shelter with a gas chamber)—the same place that Billabong came from.
Here are her shelter notes and photos:
One-eyed Pirate!

Notes: HELD OVER….AGAIN….again…***FAVORITE***This poor girl has a lot of things working against her. First and foremost she is on death row at Roicy, but even worse than that is the fact that she’s not perfect. She has a cataract in one of her eyes which has cost her the vision in that eye. Although it looks a little funny, she can still see just fine! If ever there was a dog at Roicy who needed a miracle than this is the one! Her chances of being adopted are slim to none so her ONLY chance will be rescue. Please make room in your homes and hearts for this innocent and precious soul. Heelers are known as velcro dogs and they are extremely loyal and intelligent. Please give her a chance, because if you don’t, no one will…

Debbie, a volunteer at Roicy, e-mailed me Pirate’s information. I had met Trudy online following Hurricane Katrina rescue efforts. In November, Trudy drove down from Wisconsin to take a van load of rescued dogs and cats from Louisiana and Mississippi up to rescue groups in Wisconsin and Minnesota.
The timing was just right for Pirate. Since Pirate was running out of time at Roicy, Trudy arranged to have Pirate pulled and boarded until she could get there. Then Pirate made the long trip back to Wisconsin in Trudy’s van.
I knew that Homeward Bound in Minnesota was good at placing ACDs. They offered to take Pirate into a foster home. Other volunteers drove Pirate (along with Levi) from Wisconsin up to Minnesota.
Pirate was spayed and treated for heartworm. She recovered quickly. She did well in her Minnesota foster home and found her new home at her first Homeward Bound Petco adoption event. A woman who had an ACD mix had heard about Pirate. She came to meet her and said she wasn’t leaving without her.

Pirate went to a perfect home, with teenaged kids, another dog, and a large fenced yard.
